EATING OUT
There is an adequate number and range of restaurants.
Les Cornettes in La Chapelle-d'Abondance is one of our favourites; amazingly good value 'menus' with excellent food. The Vieux Four, in an old farm building, has a reputation for the best Brasserade in Châtel.
The Pierrier serves Savoyard specialities. La Ripaille, almost opposite the Linga gondola, was highly recommended by a past reporter, especially for its fish. Of all ski areas Les Portes du Soleil offers the highest concentration of mountain restaurants with affordable menus in the French Alps.
APRES-SKI
Châtel offers good night life. The Tunnel bar, is very popular with a cosmopolitan atmosphere and has a DJ or live music every night. The Isba bar and the new Avalanche Bar are popular too. La Godille, close to the Super-Châtel gondola & popular at tea time, has a more French feel.
Otherwise there's a bowling alley, and one of the cinemas shows English-language films a few times a week. We recommend the Saf disco in Morgins for a late night foray. Taxis can be arranged.
OFF THE SLOPES
Those with a car have some entertaining excursions available: Geneva, Thonon and Evian for shopping and views of Lac Leman.
A trip to the thermal baths at Lavey is perfect for a bad weather day. The tourist office organises daily events for non-slope users, e.g. a trip to the local cheese farm, snowshoe walks, and parapenting. There are a number of chair lifts which are accessible by non skiers to enable them to enjoy mountain top lunches along with fellow skiers.
ACTIVITIES
Indoor Swimming pool, bowling, cinema, library, outdoor Skating rink, parapente, horse-drawn carriage rides, helicopter rides, dog-sledding, snow-shoe excursions, farm visits, and an all year round toboggan run.
